Responsible Gaming, Regulation and Certification in Latin America and the Caribbean

Gaming Laboratories International, GLI, with more than 30 years of experience, stands out for its commitment to excellence in consulting and compliance testing in various areas of gaming, from land-based to iGaming and sports betting.

On Tuesday 9 April, during the academic sessions held at the GAT Expo, Karen Sierra-Hughes, GLI's Vice President for Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, spoke at a conference entitled ‘Technology and Sustainable Gaming’.

Karen Sierra has played a leading role as a consultant to government agencies in Latin America and the Caribbean in the adoption of new land-based and online regulations.

During her speech, Karen reflected on the complex process of security in Latin America and the Caribbean, while offering a different perspective on the issue.

She recalled that it is essential to recognise the players and their role in this process, as well as the need to collaborate with providers and authorities to ensure a secure and transparent environment. “Regulation will play a crucial role in this process,” said Karen Sierra-Hughes, and to this end, she proposed encouraging technological innovation to better understand player behaviour and promote responsible practices in all gaming operations.

She also discussed artificial intelligence, which already plays a prominent role in this field, and explained how AI allows for in-depth data analysis to detect potential irregularities and protect the integrity of the game. Karen clarifies that it can be used by both game developers and operators as well.

Karen also states that ‘"ata security is critical in this process, as any vulnerability could compromise trust in the system and affect the player experience. It is crucial to establish rigorous security standards and work closely with (law enforcement) authorities to ensure a safe and transparent gaming environment".

Finally, Karen clarifies that it is important to address the cultural and trust challenges that persist in many countries, as this can hinder efforts to ensure the integrity of the game and the protection of players.

The Vice President for Latin America, Caribbean and Spain, Karen Sierra-Hughes, concluded her speech by thanking everyone involved in this important work and welcomed the progress they are all making together towards a safer and more transparent future for the world of Gaming.
